Vitoria-Gasteiz Home by Patxi Cortazar Arquitecto

The Vitoria-Gasteiz Home is a contemporary private residence located in Vitoria-Gasteiz in the Basque Country, Spain. This luxurious dwelling was designed by Patxi Cortazar Arquitecto and it is characterized by a minimal exterior with a white facade with contrasting features.
Its monochrome interior gives it an air of peace and tranquility while also providing its residents with stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Vitoria Gasteiz Home by Patxi Cortazar Arquitecto in Spain

Single-family home built essentially in the ground floor, leaving at the first floor only a little studio at the double height of the room and a guest room with bathroom.

The plot has a leaning slope towards the direction North South, so that the construction is located at the North of it, leaving as much space as possible in the South direction.

The project of the building obeys to a fragmented architecture, in a composition of several volumes, with flat or leaning roofs, depending on the direction and the spaces they cover.

The elevator, connected to the chimneys, formalizes the highest and slimmest volume for its functional necessities, which stands out by fitting around itself the rest of the volumes.

The building is covered by white limestone and black pre-patinated zinc at the leaning volumes.

The orientation of the day spaces is at midday and the night spaces at the orientation North and East.

The design of the building has been made following eco-design criteria. When writing the project, the environmental aspects have been evaluated and we have defined actions for the achievement of the goals, having checked their compliance afterwards.

The building conditioning is accomplished through a system of geothermal heat pump with a radiant and refreshing floor. It has mechanic ventilation with heat recovery, the gaps have solar protection with different characteristics depending on the orientation, and the materials used have sustainability certificates; most of them are recyclable.

Quonochontaug House by Bernheimer Architecture on Rhode Island in New York

Quonochontaug House by Bernheimer Architecture

The Quonochontaug House is a project by the New York-based studio Bernheimer ArchitectureThe house itself is located on Rhode Island in New York, USA.
It’s design revolves around natural light. This daylit vacation house looks very simple, yet still elegant on the outside, but the interior features a myriad of spaces that dynamically change as the natural light shifts from one side to the other.

Quonochontaug House by Bernheimer Architecture on Rhode Island in New York

The Quonochontaug House in coastal Rhode Island is located three hours from New York City and is built as a retreat for a family from Brooklyn. The design is organized around an open-plan ground floor punctuated by a series of double-height sky-lit spaces that progress from entry to bay view. The light volumes alternate around an east-west axis defined by a pool terrace (to the east) and the ocean bay (to the west). They taper at their apex for precise views of the sky above and provide shifting and ephemeral natural light patterns throughout the day, varying across seasons and according to changes in the sky and weather.

As those who dwell in New York typically experience light, shade, and color as an exterior experience, this house harnesses an opportunity to allow sunlight (and moonlight) into the deep interior of a house as something unfamiliar. The house embraces experience of the sky, of light from above, one that the owners do not get from their interior experiences of the big city. And this experience is meant to be pervasive, not binary (“day/night”, or “dark/light”). Light is subtle, constant, in terms of colorization and in terms of luminosity. Thus the house changes at any given hour depending on where clouds are, where the sun is, whether the moon is full, new, or waxing, and whether it is spring, summer, autumn, or winter.

The interior space is delineated by a cluster of ashwood-clad boxes in which all building services are enclosed. The exterior of the house is clad in Shou Sugi Ban, milled slats of cypress which have been charred, brushed, and oiled. These slats require virtually no maintenance over their lifespan and present a stark contrast to the light-bathed interior of the house.

This project won a 2015 AIA National Small Projects Award and was also featured as the May 2015, Architectural Record House of the Month.

Simply Modern – The Lo Residence by LCGA Design in Taiwan

Lo Residence by LCGA Design

Simply Modern The Lo Residence by LCGA Design in Taiwan

Lo Residence is a modern apartment situated in Toyuan, a city in northern Taiwan. The owner demanded for practical functions and LCGA Design designed an exclusive space for the couple that fulfilled all of their expectations and then some. As you will see below, this is an ultra-modern apartment that highlights its practical features.

Simply Modern The Lo Residence by LCGA Design in Taiwan

From the architects: “Besides fulfilling the house owners’ requirement for practical functions, we design a space exclusively for the couple in a simple and neat way.
Although the space is long and narrow, we make the living room into a high-ceiling space so that the natural light can enter the interior space vertically and extensively. Without any division, the whole space is distinguished through floors in different materials and height. For example, the public space is made of tiles while the private space is made of wooden floor. Walking over the floor, one can feel the relaxing atmosphere through different textures.
Besides, to enlarge the area of the TV wall in the living room, the partition wall of the bathroom is oblique and extends to the ceiling of the bedroom so that the space looks larger than its actual size, seemingly more spacious. Diverse mixture of building materials such as the grey glare combined with wooden materials creates multiple layers of feelings to the space.
Besides, we take advantage of the top floor area to create a space of an individual study and studio so that the couple can still keep their privacy without disturbing the other and have the freedom of being alone while enjoying the company with each other.”
